New on the blog: In 1935, a Texas judge denied my great‑grandfather’s divorce and granted one to his wife, awarding her cash tied to the house, part of his insurance, and most of the household goods (even towels on paper), while he walked away with debt and very little else. My grandfather remembered quitting school at 18 to work so the family could eat, saying they didn’t even have towels to dry off with, a sharp contrast between what the decree promised and how that “settlement” felt in real life.
